DGS students honor war veterans in engaging panel discussions

In honor of Veterans Day, Downers Grove South High School invited local veterans to participate in panel discussions with students. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions about the veterans’ experiences in the military. Twelve veterans represented wars throughout history including World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq.

One veteran asked the students knew if they knew anyone in the military -- a majority of hands were raised in the crowd. Students mentioned brothers and cousins who are currently serving, and some mentioned grandparents who served in the past.

“It is an honor to share my passion for the military with these high school students. It gives me the opportunity to support our current troops and those who have been wounded. Also, I hope to inspire students to begin thinking about their next step and how they want to be remembered,” Air Force veteran of 20 years, Lieutenant Colonel Mary Reed said.
