Interested in Moving to English Honors Next Year?

Dear Current North High Students and Families,

In this email you will find the specific details needed for current students to apply for honors/AP English for the 2018-2019 school year.  If you are currently in an honors/AP English class, you do NOT need to follow the steps below.  These steps are for those students currently in a 300-level class who would like to be considered for honors for next year.  Please pay attention to the details and the timelines as exceptions will not be made.

  1. Starting Monday, November 13, go to the English Office (room 268) to do two things:
    1. Pick up the teacher recommendation form
    2. Sign up to apply (Ms. Georgiou will get you signed up). Do NOT just take a teacher recommendation form. You must get signed up so we have you in the system.

  2. Bring the teacher recommendation form to your current English teacher and kindly ask him/her to fill it out for you. You MUST give your teacher this form no later than Monday, December 4.

  3. When you give your teacher the recommendation form, you should also have with you a printed copy of an argument-based essay/paragraph from class that you wrote this year and that you think best represents your skills as a writer.  When you hand your teacher the recommendation form, you should also ask him/her to initial the essay as proof that you wrote it in class this year.  After you get your teacher to initial the essay, you should bring the essay to the English Office to turn it in (YOU…not your teacher)

  4. You MUST turn in your initialed essay to the English Office by Monday, December 4.

  5. Your teacher will turn in the recommendation form, so you do not need to worry about that once you have given it to your teacher to complete.

  6. You will find out the results of your application via a letter sent to your current English class sometime after Winter Break.  Please do NOT email or ask about the status; we will let you know.

When reviewing candidates who have applied, we will examine the following criteria to make our decisions (the order below does not represent importance of any one factor over another).

  1. Current English Grades
  2. Standardized Test Scores in Reading
  3. Teacher Recommendation
  4. Writing Sample

You may begin picking up the teacher recommendation forms and signing up to apply starting Monday, November 13. If you should have any questions, please come to the English Office (room 268) for assistance. We thank you for your interest in Honors English, and we appreciate your attention to detail within this application process.
