DGS Principal Schwartz: Quick Update

Schedule clarifications, webinar link, and textbook/material pick-up

Greetings,

As promised, I wanted to provide you a quick update.

We have fielded several questions as to how to read student schedules properly.  I will address a few of the questions that were asked most often.

  • There is more than one class listed for given periods.  In this case, you will need to look at the “marking period” column.  MP1 represents a first semester class and MP2 represents a second semester class.  If both are listed, the course is year-long.
  • Math 1S, 2S, and 3S are listed more than once.  These classes meet for one whole period and half of another.  It is usually indicated with an A or B in front of the course name (in that period).  For example, 4A Math 1S. In this example, the student has Math 1S during 3rd period and the first half of 4th period.  If it was 4B Math 1S, they would meet the second half of 4th period and the first half of 5th period.
  • The schedule says “Virtual Learn Res” on it.  These resource periods were created for the Hybrid schedule to provide the students with a place to go during their lunch period.  Because we could not house 4-600 students in the cafeteria, we created very small virtual resources for the students to go to instead of the cafeteria.  Since we are not able to meet in person, these are not necessary so you can ignore them for the time being.

Similarly, while in Remote Learning, students do not have to log in for Lunch periods and/or Study Hall/Resource periods where they appear on their schedules.  This includes those labeled ARC, Mustang Corral, and resource. Students should use that time to complete assignments and to study as needed.

As a reminder, I will be hosting a “I heard” webinar to answer any questions on Wednesday, August 19 from 6:30-8:00 pm.  The invitation to the webinar is as follows:

In the past, District 99 has partnered with grit2, a non-profit organization committed to providing support for area parents and teens.  grit2 will be presenting a live Zoom webinar on Wednesday, August 26 at 10:00 am.  “Parenting Strategies for Uncertain Times” will be led by Cathy Adams. More information and the Zoom link can be found on the grit2 webpage.

Finally, all of the textbooks have been moved back to the cafeteria, 2800 boxes have been set and labeled, and a group began packing them with textbooks and student materials today. By tomorrow we hope to be far enough along to post a schedule of available times for you to come and pick the materials up. We anticipate offering morning and late afternoon/evening times so that students do not have to miss class time to do this. Thank you for your patience after having to change direction last week.

Stay well,

Mr. Schwartz
