Bracing for up to a $2 million loss in state funding, the District 99 Board of Education took steps at its meeting Monday, Feb. 22 to mitigate the effect of the state’s funding crisis. They also looked at innovative learning strategies using new technology in the classroom.
With state funding in jeopardy, the District 99 Board of Education is reviewing potential budget cuts and revenue enhancements. A Community Engagement process has also been launched to obtain feedback on the budget changes.
North High was named a Silver Medal School by U.S. News & World Report, an honor that places it among the top, large public high schools in the country.
With the arrival of winter weather, we wanted to review our communication procedures with District 99 families in the unlikely event that we will have to close North and South High Schools. An announcement of a potential school closing will be communicated to District 99 families in multiple ways: District 99 webpage, E-News message to subscribers, automated phone call to District 99 families and via TV and radio announcements.
The Board of Education sets tax levy, with the smallest increase to taxpayers in history. It also reviews next year's school calendar and capital improvement projects.
The Board of Education reviews the District's 2009 State School Report Card, which shows continued increases on the Prairie State Achievement Exam, and honors students and staff.
Board members heard a lengthy report Monday on fields and outdoor facilities at both schools and gave the initial go-ahead to study the issue further. Board members said that safety, crowding and aging facilties were all concerns and that further study was needed.
