Groundbreaking Celebrations to be Held for District 99 Master Facility Plan

Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove and its architect, design and construction partner Wight & Company in Darien, invite the community to attend groundbreaking ceremonies to celebrate the start of construction of the Master Facility Plan. The community voted to support the $136.6 million facility renovation plan for Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School in March 2018.

Celebrations will be held on the following days:

  • At 4 p.m. on Monday, May 6 at South High (meet at front entrance); and

  • At 4 p.m. on Monday, May 20 at North High (meet at Prince Street Circle, on the west side of school).

“This is a special time for our entire community as we prepare to transform our school facilities,” says Dr. Hank Thiele, District 99 superintendent. “We are fortunate that the community supports the plan, and are confident that this significant reinvestment will have a positive and lasting impact on our current and future students.”

As a result of the passage of the referendum, air-conditioning was installed in all learning spaces last August, before the first day of school.

“The reimagining of District 99’s facilities is a result of a shared vision between the district, the community and our integrated design and construction team to provide students with the best possible modern learning environments to equip them for future success,” says Wight & Company Project Manager Amy Tiberi, who is also a District 99 community member and Downers Grove South High School alum.

Construction will begin this spring and continue through the fall of 2021. Designs for both schools are focused on safety and security, accessibility and modern learning spaces and include secured vestibules and new additions to house science, fine arts and culinary classes. In addition, both schools will have large Learning Commons areas featuring abundant natural light and seating.
