D99 Bilingual Celebration

District 99 held its 11th Annual Dinner Dance for bilingual families on April 22, 2016. The event, which was held at South High, featured members from the traditional Mexican dancing group Ballet Folklorico Teochimalli as well as South High students from Caribbean Soul, Desiree Salgado, Carlos Gabler, David Diaz, and Mireya Valadez. Special guest speaker included Dr. Lourdes Ferrer, who is a national academic consultant, researcher, writer and motivational speaker. She spoke to students and families about how to support their children academically, and how to ensure they’re well prepared for college and their careers in the future.

“We enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, entertainment and celebration of Hispanic culture,” says Kimberly Tobin, District 99’s Bilingual Coordinator. “The annual celebration is an important way for our families to meet and connect with one another.”

District 99’s bilingual program provides parents with the opportunity to meet to discuss issues of importance to bilingual families in the schools through the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC), which meets quarterly. Aside from the BPAC, the bilingual program provides workshops throughout the year, in Spanish, on topics such as checking student grades online, college, and financial aid for college.
