Board of Education Briefs - May 15, 2017

The District 99 Board of Education met on May 15, 2017. Please see the video here.

At the meeting:

  • The Board reviewed and approved revisions to the District’s discipline code. Language changes provide a wider scope of actions following a discipline violation, and more closely follow the guidelines of Senate Bill 100, which aim to discontinue “zero tolerance” procedures. See the suggested modifications here.
  • Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele reported that over 2,000 students and parents responded to the Late Start Survey. The majority of respondents were positive about the recommendation of moving Late Start Days to every Monday, with a start time of 9:30 a.m. The Board  supported the idea, and will vote to approve the schedule at its next public meeting on June 19. See the proposed schedule here; see an FAQ about this change.
  • The Board approved the 2018-19 School Calendar.
  • The Board authorized the issuance of $1,915,000 in School Fire Prevention and Life Safety Bonds; J.P. Morgan Chase Bank was the lowest bidder at 2.309%. Controller Mark Staehlin noted that by going directly to local lenders we had lower costs of issuance and received better bids because bankers in the community are more committed to helping us. Go to this link for more info.
  • The Board approved new safety netting for DGN baseball’s field at $79,900 as well as 23 new marching band instruments for $63,021.
  • Board committee assignments were made: Rick Pavinato and Dan Nicholas will serve on the District’s Policy Committee; Mike Davenport will be the representative to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) as well as the National Affiliate of IASB. Dr. Nancy Kupka will serve as representative to SASED, the district’s special education cooperative, Terry Pavesich will serve as the alternate SASED representative. Sherell Fuller and Pavesich will serve on the District 99 Education Foundation board.

The next public Board meeting is scheduled for June 19, 2017.
