10 DGS Student-Athletes Sign National Letter of Intent 2019

On Nov. 13, South High School celebrated 10 student-athletes who plan to continue their sport at the collegiate level. Parents, grandparents, other family members, coaches, and the South High administration were present to witness the students sign their National Letter of Intent to their chosen school. Click here to view photos from the celebration!

Jack Blazevich, Northern Illinois University, Baseball
Jack Blazevich will be a 3-year starter for the Mustangs Baseball team this spring at shortstop.  Jack earned All-conference honors in the West Suburban as a sophomore. Jack also earned All-Conference and All-Area honors last season as a junior. Jack was also named MVP in 2019 leading the team in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, and RBI's. Jack is equally as talented when it comes to the classroom earning IHSA All-academic honors last season as well.  Jack is truly an outstanding well-rounded student athlete who has continued to excel both on and off the field.

Brenna Cohoon, Iowa State University, Cross Country/Track & Field
Brenna has been a 4-year varsity athlete in both Cross Country and Track & Field. In cross country, she is a 4-time all-conference athlete and team captain. Brenna has earned All-State honors, finishing 19th, 8th, and 14th respectively, in each of the last three seasons. In Track & Field, Brenna is also highly accomplished. Brenna has qualified for the outdoor state meet in the 3200m run every year. During her sophomore and junior years, she earned All-State honors, finishing 4th this past spring. Brenna anchored South High’s indoor 4x800m relay to 1st place at the Illinois Top Times Classic. She holds three out of four possible school records for the 3200m, including both the F/S and varsity indoor records, and the F/S outdoor record. Brenna has proven herself as an outstanding athlete as well as an equally outstanding student. We are looking forward to one more successful season from her this spring before she begins her college career at Iowa State University.  

Ariel Johnson, Eastern Illinois University, Track & Field
Ariel has been a 3-year varsity athlete on the Track & Field team. She has earned all-conference honors every year of competition. Last year, she was a member of the 4x200m relay team that qualified for the Illinois Top Times Classic and an individual state qualifier in both the long jump and triple jump. As a team captain, she will be coming back as a strong senior leader for our track team. We are excited to see what her last high school season will bring along with a bright future at Eastern Illinois University.

Addison Karmik, University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Volleyball
Addy has been a 4-year varsity starter and 3-year team captain for the DGS Volleyball Program. She is a nationally recognized setter, a 3-year All-Conference player in the WSC (2017, 2018, 2019), an All-Area athlete, and an all-tournament team member at Rich East Invite in 2018, 2019, and 2020. She was named MaxPreps Top players in Illinois. Addy has led the program in assists the past 3 seasons and has made huge strides as a strong defender and phenomenal server as well in her career at South. Not only is Addy an outstanding athlete, she is a high achieving and hardworking student as well as a great leader and young lady. The Mustangs will greatly miss Addy in the future, but we are excited to follow her success as an athlete and an Art Education Major.

Tatum Mitchell, Baylor University, Equestrian
Tatum Mitchell has been riding horses for 10 years and has been competing at a nationally ranked level for seven years. Tatum has been ranked in the top 5 in her divisions for the past four years in her zone, qualifying for finals this year. She placed third at IHJA medal finals and has won multiple classes and awards this season. In addition to riding, Tatum is also successful in school, she is the Print Editor-in-Chief of the Blueprint, the school newspaper, and has been on the honor roll throughout her time in high school. Tatum is incredibly excited to attend Baylor University next fall to continue her athletic and academic career.

Maddie Raftery, Ohio University, Soccer
Maddie will be a 2-year starter this year at DGS as a forward in which she excels at being a dual attacking threat due to her ability to finish opportunities and create for others. Over her first year of playing at the high school level, Maddie has earned recognition All-Conference and All-Sectional status in addition to being named to the All-Area teams for the Daily Herald and My Suburban Life. Last season Maddie scored 16 goals and registered 11 assists and was named Offensive Player of the Year. Not only is Maddie an outstanding athlete, she is a great leader and teammate.

Erin Reidy, University of Minnesota, Cross Country and Track & Field
Erin has been a 4-year varsity athlete in both Cross Country and Track & Field. In cross country, she is a 4-time all-conference athlete and team captain. Erin has been an integral part of our teams that finished in the top 5 at State each year. In Track & Field, Erin is highly accomplished. Erin has qualified for the outdoor state meet in multiple events every year. As a freshman, she qualified for state in both the 4x800m relay and the 1600m run. As a sophomore, she earned all-state honors as the anchor leg of our 4x800m relay team that finished 3rd in the state. Last season, Erin anchored our 6th place 4x800m relay and finished 3rd individually in the 800m, earning all-state honors in both relays. Erin is a 3-year varsity all-conference athlete in multiple events, both indoors and outdoors. She holds multiple school records at all levels, including both the varsity indoor and outdoor 1600m records. She has proven herself as an outstanding athlete as well as an equally outstanding student. We are looking forward to one more successful season from her this spring before she begins her college career at the University of Minnesota.

Jordan Rose, Indiana State University, Soccer
Jordan will be a 3-year starter at DGS as a midfielder. Jordan has earned recognition as a 2-year All-Conference player in the West Suburban Conference (2017 & 2018); All-Sectional (2018); All-State (2019) in addition to being named to the Daily Herald All-Area Team (2019); My Suburban Life All-Area Team (2019); Naperville Invitational All-Tournament Team (2019) and Team MVP (2019). In two seasons Jordan has accumulated 30 goals and 11 assists. Jordan will be a two-year captain of the program and has been a fantastic player, teammate and leader. 

Melanie Scheiblein, Southern Illinois University, Swimming
Melanie is four-year varsity award winner earning a spot on the 2019 All-Academic Team, is 12-time All-Conference, and currently holds three varsity records. She has been a state qualifier in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, and a 2017 State Finalist. Melanie had been the driving force in the success of our swimming program. She leaves with an undefeated dual meet record and one of the few that have qualified for state all four years. She will make a great addition to the Salukis Swim and Dive program.  

Kennedy Warden, Belmont University, Cross Country and Track & Field
Kennedy has been a 4-year varsity athlete in both Cross Country and Track & Field. In cross country, she is a 4-time all-conference athlete and team captain. Kennedy has been an integral part of our teams that finished in the top 5 at State each year. In Track & Field, she is 3-year varsity all-conference athlete in multiple events, both indoors and outdoors. She has qualified for the unofficial indoor state meet twice in the 1600m run, and the IHSA outdoor state meet once. Kennedy is currently the 2nd fastest 1600m runner in DGS history. She has proven herself as an outstanding athlete as well as an equally outstanding student. Kennedy has been a great example for all of our younger athletes and always competes with a smile. We are looking forward to one more successful season from her this spring before she begins her college career at Belmont University.
