Last month, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Mayor Cunningham of Woodridge invited student members of the North High Latinx Student Union to be honored.

Mayor Cunningham proclaimed September 15-October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in the Village of Woodridge. The proclamation recognized and honored the past and present Hispanic community members who have made contributions within Woodridge.

“As a leader of the Downers Grove North Latino Student Union, this is a huge honor for us to be acknowledged and heard,” says DGN senior Elissa Tapia. “We are so glad that our representation within our club and our school is growing. This is only the beginning of something amazing.”

North High’s Latinx Student Union was established in 2018 and the students organize events for members of the DGN community to connect and discuss current issues. Recently, the organization hosted a discussion with DGN’s Black Student Union and they look forward to partnering with the DGN Asian American Pacific Islander Student Union. In recent years, DGN’s Latinx students have attended the Hispanic Student Leadership Conference in Chicago to hear from guest speakers and attend a college fair.
