DGN Student Wins Congressional Seminar Essay Contest

Essay Contest Winner Jonathan Westfall, with Social Studies Teacher Karen Spahr-Thomas and Department Chair Michael Roethler. Westfall will travel to Washington D.C. in June 2022 to participate in a week-long workshop about citizenship and national government.

Downers Grove North High School 10th grade student Jonathan Westfall won the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) Congressional Seminar Essay Contest. Westfall’s winning essay addressed the topic of the Electoral College. He will travel to Washington D.C. in June 2022 to participate in a week-long workshop about citizenship and national government as well as tours of various sites in the nation’s capital.

“Jonathan is a skilled writer who is deeply interested in government,” says North High Social Studies Teacher Karen Spahr-Thomas, who encouraged Westfall to enter the contest. “We’re proud of Jonathan for making this extra academic effort and for his success.” 

In addition to the student trips, North High’s social studies department will receive a cash prize, which will be used for classroom materials.
