DECA
Congratulations to DECA member Julie Mueller! Julie competed in an
intense race for the Illinois DECA State Officer Team on Wednesday at
Oakton Community College. She has been elected to serve Illinois DECA as
a Vice-President! Congratulations Julie! Your fellow DECA members and
business teachers are proud of you! (Polen, 10/10)
There will be a DECA meeting on Tuesday at 7:25 am in B327. Remember
that we don’t have school on Monday so your first day back will be DECA
Tuesday. We will hear officer candidate speeches, vote for officers,
decide on shirts, and vote for a fun activity. Be on time for the

Representatives from Grinnel and Blackburn Colleges and Ohio State
University will be here on Tuesday, October 14th. Representatives from
DuPaul & Purdue Universities will be here on Wednesday, October 15th. If
you are interested in attending any of these presentations, you can sign

Making High School Count
Freshman will be attending a presentation called “Making High School
Count” on Wednesday, October 15th, during periods 1, 2, and 3. Which
period they attend is determined by their freshman PE class. PE teachers
will be informing students prior to Wednesday which presentation they
should attend. Please plan to be missing appropriately 1/3 of your
freshman students during these periods on October 15th. (Battaglia,

Lost & Found
The Deans Office and Police Counselors have received multiple cell
phones found all around the school. Unfortunately, the batteries are
dead. If you lost your cell phone recently, bring your charger to
Officer Porras, Room A108, with a description of your phone. You MUST be
able to prove the phone is yours to get it back. I also have a set of
car keys and two sets of house keys. Again, you must be able to prove
the keys are yours to get them back, such as a description of the keys

Freshman Class Board
Congratulations to our newly elected officers on the Freshman Class
Board: Co-Presidents; Amber Carpenter & Lisa Ledvora, Secretary; Tim
Chow, and Fundraising; Paulina Baba & Jacquelyn Thate. All freshman are
welcome to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, October 21st at 7:30

Key Club
There is no Key Club meeting this Thursday. Instead, we are doing
Adopt-A-Highway. If you are participating in that activity, meet by the
Library after school on Thursday. Our next meeting will be October 16th.

Bookstore IOUs
ALL STUDENTS who have an IOU in the Bookstore for replacement student
I.D.'s. Payment of $5 is due on each ID charged. If you have two or more
unpaid IOU's, you will not get another replacement ID on credit until
you pay your outstanding bill. This includes ID's charged in previous

FCCLA
Do you love to cook, work with children, or design clothing? FCCLA,
Family Career and Community Leaders of America, offers exciting
opportunities to compete in events such as: Cake Decorating, Pre-School
Storytelling, Catering, Team Cooking “Iron Chef” Style, Interior Design
and Fashion Design. Come check out FCCLA during an informational meeting
on Tuesday, October 7th in Room B123 from 3:30 – 4:00. (O’Connor, 9/29

Outdoor Adventure Club
Outdoor Adventure Club Members: We are going to Belmont Prairie on
Wednesday to do a little restoration work. You need a signed permission
and volunteer form to work at the prairie. See Mr. Howard for details.

Calliope
Attention all students interested in writing poetry, telling stories,
taking photographs, and performing – Calliope, South’s Fine Arts and
Literacy magazine will be holding our first meeting of the school year
this Wednesday, October 8th, in Room C362 at 3:30. We will be discussing
this years first Poetry Café, to be held on October 29th, and planning
and working on the first issue of Calliope – the Green book. All are
welcome. Ask Ms. Rowley, Ms. Lynn, or Mr. Kuhn for more information.

Careers in Medicine
Midwestern University in Downers Grove will be offering four
Mini-Medical School sessions about interesting and important health care
topics from physicians and health care professionals beginning October
20th from 6:30 – 8:15 pm. It is open to students interested in a career
in the health field. An informational flyer is available in the College

Service Opportunity
Beginning today, there will be a van available every Tuesday &
Wednesday afternoon to take DGS students to the Woodridge Resource
Center to work with second thru fifth graders. We will be assisting the
elementary students with art projects. The van will leave from entrance
#1 (by the library) at 3:45 and return to DGS at 5:15. (DellaMaria,

Snowball
This announcement is for anyone interested in the 2008 Fall Snowball
Event. Would you like to get away for a few days, relax, and hang out
with old friends while meeting new people and eating great food? If so,
Snowball is the event for you! The event will take place on November
21st and 22nd. You can pick up an application in the Student Activities
Office. Hurry though, the deadline for applications will be on October

PSAT
Students wishing to take the PSAT test must register in the Bookstore
beginning Monday, September 29th, through Thursday, October 9th. The
cost of the test is $21. Checks should be made out to Downers Grove

Aviation Careers
Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is hosting their annual
American Airlines Career Day on Saturday, October 11th. Students
interested in a career in aviation are flown to SIU, free of charge, to
tour the aviation facilities and main campus and then be flown back to
Chicago. Space is limited. Information is available in the College &

Network Passwords
Beginning September 29th, all students will receive a message upon
logging into the school network that your password must be changed. The
system will allow you to decline changing their password the first ten
times you login (grace logins). On the tenth login, however, you must
choose a new one. Detailed instructions as to how to change your
password have been sent to your school email address. Please check your
email immediately.
Library Overdue Notices
The Library is sending overdue notices to students through GroupWise,
the school email. If you have checked a book out from the library,
please check your email to see if it is already due. If you do not know
how to access your school email, please check the Blackboard homepage
for directions or stop in the library, where we will be happy to show

Interested in Yearbook? We meet Tuesdays
and Thursdays in Room A307 after school. See Mrs. Ticaric (Tuh-car-ick)

Cell Phones
Attention ALL Students: Please turn off your phones by 8:00 AM and
don’t turn them back on until you exit the building or the 3:20 Bell
Rings! If you have early release, your phone must remain off until you

Document your Absences!
Attention students: Please remember to bring documentation for
absences whenever possible. If you have a medical or dental appointment,
are called to court or make a college visit, please submit your
documents to the attendance office. (Hash, 9/10-9/11)
Voter Registration
If you will turn 18 on or before November 4, you can register to vote
in the upcoming election. Come to C258 before school or C260 after
school and ask for Ms. Quain. Please bring some ID with your current
address. You do not need to declare party affiliation to register to
vote. The last day to register is Tuesday, October 7.
Service Club
Hey, all of you volunteers out there… Any student who participates in
Community service projects or activities outside of the school day can
get recognized for their service through Service Club. Check the
bulletin board outside of the student activities office, C149, for a
listing of opportunities. Log sheets are available in C149 and C166.
