Sophomore Gamenotes 2008

DGS  2 York 5
Although the Mustangs ended their season on a huge loss, they played well as a team and fought until the end.  York scored the first goal of many at the 19:07 mark.  DGS tied it up with a goal from defender Emily Drews as she sent a gorgeous free kick into the net with four minutes to go in the half.  The Dukes shattered the Mustang celebration as they scored and took the lead just before the end of the half.  York would continue their scoring streak as they started the second half with a goal off a corner kick at the 29:48 mark.  Ten minutes later, Kailey Ross scored a fine goal to keep the hope for the Mustangs alive (assist by Drews).  York finished off the scoring with two more goals to secure the victory.  Goalkeeper Jackie Svetich gave her best performance of the season as she made several spectacular saves for DGS.
DGS  4 Morton 1
Midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell started off the scoring for DGS with a goal at the 17:47 mark that she connected on from a free kick from defender Emily Drews that hit the post.  Forward Richelle Palermo then took the other Mustangs’ keeper one on one, finding the back of the net at the 14:40 mark.  Morton was determined not to get shut out, and scored a nice goal from outside the 18 just five minutes before the end of the first half.  Forward Nicole Dietz dominated the scoring in the second half as she scored both goals, at the 22:55 (assist by midfielder Jessi Vosicky) and 19:21 marks.  This win confirmed our undefeated record in conference – way to go!
DGS  0 Hinsdale South 0
The Mustangs dominated this competition but got shut out by the Hornets in the end.  DGS had numerous exciting attacks on goal, but just could not find the back of the net.  Exceptional play came from midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell, forward Nicole Dietz, and defenders Julie Gromacki and Emily Drews.  Keeper Jackie Svetich earned the shutout for the Mustangs.
DGS  1 Wheaton Warrenville South 1
Dietz comes through once again for the Mustangs!  The first half saw the Mustangs and the Tigers continually combating to score a goal.  In the second half, WWS would be the first to achieve as they netted a ball at the 17:54 mark.  Ten minutes later, forward Nicole Dietz answered for DGS with the tying goal in back-to-back games.  Exceptional play came from midfielders Nicole Truesdale and Jacqueline Mitchell, as well as defenders Julie Gromacki and Emily Drews.  It was a great team effort overall and the Mustangs played hard!
DGS  1 Lockport 1
This was a battle to the end!  Lockport got on the board first as they scored in the first two minutes of competition.  Despite several hopeful offensive attacks by forwards Richelle Palermo and Nicole Dietz, along with midfielders Jacqueline Mitchell and Nicole Truesdale, the Mustangs came up short in the first half.  Just seconds before the game got called on account of lightning in the second half, Dietz buried a shot and tied the game.

DGS  2 Glenbard West 5
The Hilltoppers scored at downhill speed against the Mustangs in the first half of play.  After trailing by four goals, the Mustangs were determined not to get shut out.  Just minutes after the start of the second half, defender Emily Drews delivered with a goal for DGS off a free kick.  Glenbard West retaliated a few minutes later with their fifth goal.  Drews answered with another goal off a free kick at the 9:30 mark.  The sophomore team thanks freshman Katie Moosmann for playing with them today!

DGS  9  Addison Trail 0
It took a while for the Mustangs to start the scoring action, but when they did, it was a great team effort!  Midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell started the streak of goals as she scored at the 16:10 mark (assist by midfielder Jessi Vosicky).  It was then forward Nicole Dietz’s turn as she took the AT keeper one on one and scored two goals.  Forward Richelle Palermo took over as she scored at the 3:37 mark (assist by Dietz).  The next goal would come from midfielder Nicole Truesdale less than a minute later (assist by Palermo).  Midfielder Callie Winter scored a beautiful goal with two minutes remaining in the first half (assist by Mitchell).  Finishing up the scoring for the half was Palermo with a goal at the 1:23 mark (assist by Mitchell).  Mitchell started the scoring in the second half with a goal in the first three minutes of play (assist by Dietz).  Defender Emily Drews would seal the game with the ninth goal for DGS just seconds before the end of the competition.  The burly defense of Drews, Lindsey Galvan, Kailey Ross, Julie Gromacki, and Shannon Leahy helped goalkeeper Jackie Svetich notch a shutout for the Mustangs.

DGS  2  Lincoln-Way Central 1 (pk)
The Mustangs got off to a rough start in this competition.  Just seconds before the end of the first half, the Mustangs got caught resting and LWC netted a goal.  Thanks to Katie Moosmann, the Mustangs tied the game with her goal at the 7:37 mark in regulation play.  The Mustangs would prevail in the penalty round, as goalkeeper Brooke Schlictman saved a crucial shot and midfielder Jessi Vosicky, forward Nicole Dietz, defender Shannon Leahy, and midfielder Nicole Truesdale all scored.  A solid defensive performance came from Kailey Ross, Cara Doogan and Emily Drews.

DGS  0  Lyons 2
Lyons Township proved to also be too much for the Mustangs as they scored a goal in each half, shutting out DGS.  Goalkeeper Brooke Schlictman made several key saves to keep the Mustangs alive.  Strong play for DGS came from midfielders Jacqueline Mitchell and Kelly Slayden, defenders Emily Drews and Cara Doogan, and forwards Nicole Dietz and Richelle Palermo.

DGS   1   Fremd 4
Defender Emily Drews got the Mustangs off to a great start as she scored from a free kick in the first seven minutes of play.  Fremd retaliated with a goal soon after that to tie the game.  Fremd’s offense proved to be too much for DGS as they went on to score three more goals to secure the victory.  The sophomore team thanks Cara Doogan for playing with them today!

DGS  7  Willowbrook 0
Forward Richelle Palermo began the scoring as she netted the first two goals of the game, both assisted by midfielder Jessi Vosicky.  Forward Nicole Dietz then took over as she went one on one with the Warriors’ keeper and scored.  Her second goal followed two minutes later (assist by defender & captain Brittany Larson).  Midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell ended the first half with her goal at the 10:20 mark (assist by Dietz).  Mitchell would continue the scoring in the second half as she connected on a pass from Palermo in the first five minutes of play.  Larson’s corner kick a few minutes later would end the scoring for DGS.  Dazzling defensive play by Kailey Ross, Shannon Leahy, Julie Gromacki, Lindsey Galvan, and Larson helped goalkeepers Jackie Svetich and Brooke Schlictman earn the shutout.

DGS  0  Lincoln-Way East 1
The lone goal of the game was scored off a penalty kick by LWE at the 32:00 mark in the first half.  The Mustangs certainly gave the Griffins a battle throughout the game, but just fell short of scoring.  The sophomore team thanks freshmen Katie Moosmann and Brooke Schlictman for playing with us today!

DGS  1  Lemont 0
Forward Richelle Palermo meant business in this match against the previously undefeated Indians.  At the 16:34 mark of the first half, Palermo scored the lone goal of the game as she placed her rebound shot off the Lemont keeper in the back of the net.  Defenders Emily Drews, Brittany Larson, Julie Gromacki, Kailey Ross, and Shannon Leahy secured the victory and shutout for DGS with their aggressive play.  Goalkeeper Brooke Schlictman came through again for the Mustangs, making several crucial saves to shut down the Lemont offense and hand them their first loss of the season.

DGS  10  Proviso East 0
Forward Nicole Dietz started the scoring frenzy as she found the back of the Pirates’ net in the first three minutes of play.  Midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell wasted no time and scored next.  Forward Richelle Palermo then got in on the action when she connected on a rebound off the Proviso keeper.  Dietz came back for more as she notched her second goal of the game (assist by midfielder Michelle Casey).  The next two goals were scored by midfielder Jessi Vosicky (assist by midfielder Lauren Laraia), and Palermo.  Forward Natalie Urlaub finished up the first half with two goals, the first assisted by Mitchell.  The second half saw midfielder Nicole Truesdale score off a penalty kick and midfielder Callie Winter score off a header to complete the Mustang goals.  The impenetrable defense of captain Brittany Larson, Kailey Ross, Julie Gromacki, Lindsey Galvan, Emily Drews, and Shannon Leahy helped goalkeeper Brooke Schlictman earn the shutout in goal.  The sophomore team thanks Schlictman for playing for us today!!!

DGS  0  Naperville North 1
The Huskies scored off a corner kick in the first ten minutes of competition.  Despite the loss, the Mustangs played well and had their share of exciting scoring opportunities.  Outstanding play came from midfielder Jacqueline Mitchell and forward Nicole Dietz.  Goalkeeper Jackie Svetich made several key saves for DGS.

DGS  3  Leyden 1
A corner kick from defender Emily Drews started off the scoring for the Mustangs at the 11:55 mark during the first half of play.  Leyden answered early in the second half with a goal during the first three minutes.  Forward Nicole Dietz helped the Mustangs take the lead with a goal (assist by midfielder Nicole Truesdale) less than ten minutes later.  DGS was then awarded a penalty kick due to a deliberate handball in the Eagles’ box, which defender Brittany Larson easily put past the Leyden keeper.

DGS  0  Oak Park 1
This game saw the Mustangs and the Huskies battling to hit the back of the net for the entire first half.  Unfortunately for DGS, OPRF scored the lone goal of the game in the last three minutes of play.
