IHSA Sectional, May 9, 2008

The Varsity team finished in 3rd place out of 22 teams!  Everyone contributed to the team total, as DGS scored points in 14 of 18 events.  Leading the way for the Mustangs were four state qualifiers:  Grace Magliola (3rd in the 3200m Run), Lynn Mueller (1st in the Long Jump), Michelle Hartnett (1st in the Pole Vault), and Nicole Thate (1st in the 800m Run).  Congratulations, and good luck at State!

JV Invite, May 5, 2008

The JV team had its final meet of the season on a perfect evening at Naperville Central High School.  Many PRs were recorded, and there were two first place finishers:  Kat Connor beat 57 competitors to finish first in the 1600m run, and the 4x100m relay team of Elaine Chapman, Erin Bernstein, Amanda Ahrendt and Quaneisha Harris came out on top.  No team scores were kept.

WSC Gold Outdoor Conference Championship, May 2, 2008

Both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams earned conference championships Friday night at Leyden High School!  Undeterred by rain, a delay due to lightning, and the absence of 18 seniors who attended prom, the Mustangs turned in strong performances on the track and in the field.  On the Varsity level, the team outscored Leyden 146 to 134.  This outcome of this relatively close contest proved that every point really did count.  Sixth place finishes were not to be taken for granted, as those single points added up to help make the difference in the final score.

Glenbard West Invite, April 19, 2008

This weekend's meet was a premier invitational in the state, and the Mustangs performed well on both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph levels.  As a team, Varsity finished in 12th place, but should not be discouraged with this score as many excellent individual and relay performances were recorded.  To score a point for the team at a meet like this is a major accomplishment, and there were several individuals on the Varsity level that contributed to our point total.  Michelle Hartnett finished in 5th place in the triple jump and in 6th place in the pole vault.  Johanna Schnitzler was 6th in the 100m Hurdles and 8th in the 300m Hurdles.  Casey Harms scored a point for the team by finishing in 8th place in the 3200m Run, and Nicole Thate finished in 2nd place in the 800m Run.  The Frosh/Soph team scored an impressive 6th place finish among 16 teams.  Point scorers were:  Kathleen Riordan, 6th in the High Jump, Nikki Mihelich, 4th in the long jump and 2nd in the 200m Dash, Lauren McGrath, 4th in the Pole Vault, Jessica Leone, 7th in the 100m Dash, The 4x800m Relay team of Cara Drennan, Kate Even, Alyssa Markham and Kathleen Riordan was 4th, Courtney Conrad and Rachel Kelly were 6th and 7th in the 3200m Run, Cara Drennan was 5th in the 800m Run, and the 4x400m Relay team of Kathleen Riordan, Cara Drenna, Jessica Leone and Nikki Mihelich finished in 2nd place.

DGS Mustang Invite, April 5, 2008

At the Mustang Invite, the DGS track team earned third place out of eight teams on both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph levels.  This was a fine performance considering the high quality of competition.  Many girls brought home medals and ribbons, and 24 PRs were earned!  First place finishes went to Varsity athletes Courtney Gosewisch in the triple jump (34-9.75) and Lynn Mueller in the long jump (16-5.5).  Congratulations ladies!  A special thank you goes out to all the parents who volunteered their time to make this meet run smoothly.  Your hard work is appreciated!

DGS vs. DGN and York, April 2, 2008

The Mustangs began their outdoor season with great weather!  At the Downers Grove North track, with the sun shining down on us (until the last few events of the evening), DGS turned in some noteworthy performances, including first place finishes on the Frosh/Soph level from Nikki Mihelich in the long jump (15-3.5) and 200m Dash (28.5), Kristin Benes in the pole vault (7-0) and 800m Run (2:44.50), and Colleen Smith in the 100m Dash (14.6).  On the Varsity level, first place was earned by Michelle Hartnett in the triple jump (31-3) and pole vault (8-6), Johanna Schnitzler in the 100m hurdles (18.2), Grace Magliola in the 800m Run (2:29.0), and Nicole Thate in the 400m Dash (1:03.1).  As a team, Frosh/Soph finished in third place behind DGN and York, and Varsity was second, with DGN earning the win.

Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic, March 29, 2008

The unofficial "Indoor State Meet" was the perfect opportunity for earning PRs and breaking records, as the Mustangs achieved both at the Illinois Wesleyan Shirk Center.  The Distance Medley Relay team of Casey Harms, Grace Magliola, Michelle Hartnett, and Nicole Thate earned trophies for their second place finish.  Their time of 12:56.79 smashed the previous DMR school record of 13:25.76.  Another school record was broken by Grace Magliola, who set a new indoor standard in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:25.98 to finish in 9th place.  Nicole Thate was also a medalist with an eighth place finish in the 800 meter run (2:22.8).  The 4x800 meter relay team of Casey Harms, Courtney Conrad, Jess Pacholski, and Jenn Sapko competed well as two of the four runners earned PRs for their performances.  The 4x200 meter relay team of Bree Smith, Michelle Hartnett, Jess Engel and Lynn Mueller moved up in the rankings with their 9th place finish.  The foursome ran well enough to beat out several teams that entered the competition with better seed times.

WSC Gold Indoor Conference Championship, March 15, 2008

The Mustangs continued their winning tradition by sweeping the conference meet.  The Frosh/Soph team scored an impressive 188 points to second place Morton's 166.  Frosh/Soph conference champions were Elaine Chapman in the 55m Dash (7.93), Kristin Benes in the 400m Dash (1:06.37) and Pole Vault (8-0), Jessica Pacholski in the 1600m Run, Nikki Mihelich in the long jump (14-10.75) and triple jump (30-08), and the 4x400m Relay of Kristin Benes, Cara Drennan, Jessica Leone, and Nikki Mihelich.  The 4x400m Relay's time of 4:28.88 broke an 11-year-old conference record by 7 seconds!  The Varsity team scored 168.5 points to second place Proviso East's 114.  Conference champions were Johanna Schnitzler in the 55m Hurdles (9.43),  Lynn Mueller in the long jump, the 4x400m Relay (4:20.61) of Sarah Sielisch, Michelle Hartnett, Michelle Tan, and Johanna Schnitzler, and Nicole Thate in the 800 (2:19.84) and the 1600 (5:23.88).  Nicole's time in the 1600 broke her own conference record set in 2006.  Congratulations ladies.  Let's keep the momentum going as we head into the outdoor season!

Glenbard North Invitational, March 7, 2008

At the Bud Swanson Invitational, the Mustangs ran against some of the area's top teams with good results.  On the Varsity level, DGS finished in 4th place among eight teams.  Winning the meet was Glenbard North (126), in 2nd place Naperville North (105), 3rd place was Prospect (104), and DGS scored 78.  A first place finish went to the 4x400m Relay which consisted of Sarah Sielisch, Grace Magliola, Jenn Sapko and Nicole Thate.  Their time tied the meet record set by Glenbrook North in 1984!  On the JV level, Naperville North won with 115 points, Prospect finished 2nd with 96, and the Mustangs tied Glenbard North for 3rd place with 78.33 points.  Individual winners were Michelle Tan in the triple jump (29-8.75) and the 400 (1:09.8), and Nikki Mihelich and Colleen Smith who tied for 1st place in the long jump (14-10.5).  In the relay events, first place finishes and meet records went to the Medley Relay team of Colleen Smith, Quaneisha Harris, Melanie Piecuch, and Nikki Mihelich (2:31.4) and the 4x240m Relay team of Erin Bernstein, Katelyn Rattner, Shelita Howard, and Amanda Austin (2:29.4).

Mustang Relays, March 3, 2008

What an exciting evening!  The relay meet was our first chance at running on a 200-meter track with exceptional competition, and the Mustangs fared quite well.  The highlight of the night was the 4x800m Relay's IPTT-qualifying performance.  Congratulations to Grace Magliola, Casey Harms, Jessica Pacholski, and Nicole Thate!  They ran a 9:54.6 to finish in 7th place and well under the qualifying standard of 10:00.

Argo Invitational, March 1, 2008

The Mustangs had an exceptional outing at Argo.  Out of ten teams, the Mustangs finished in second place.  St. Ignatius won the meet with a total of 175 points, while DGS (114 pts) edged out Lockport (110 pts).  Grace Magliola led the team with her performance in the 3200m Run.  She finished with a time of 11:39.4, which qualifies her for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic.  Other first place finishers were Nicole Thate in the 1600 (5:24.), and Lynn Mueller in the 200m Dash (28.0).

Plainfield South Invitational, February 23, 2008

The DGS JV team finished in 2nd place, just 15 points behind Neuqua Valley, at our first invitational of the year.  We had many first place finishers including Nikki Mihelich in the long jump (15-8), Kristin Benes in the Pole Vault (8-0), Quaneisha Harris in the 55m Low Hurdles (10.40), and all three relays, the 4x200m Relay Team of Colleen Smith, Laura Whitt, Quaneisha Harris, and Mariah Miller, the 4x800m Relay Team of Sam Mugnolo, Alyssa Markham, Katie Jalette, and Courtney Conrad, and the 4x400m Relay Team of Kristin Benes, Lauren McGrath, Mariah Miller and Nikki Mihelich.  On the Varsity level, DGS finished in 3rd place behind Neuqua Valley and Plainfield North.  First place finishers were Nicole Thate in the 1600 (5:27) and Casey Harms in the 3200 (12:22).  Many athletes earned new PRs at this meet, and noteworthy was the number of girls who stepped in as alternates for those who were sick or injured, and they performed very well despite the short notice!

DGS vs. Benet, February 16, 2008

At our only indoor home meet of the season, the Mustangs turned in a solid performance against the Benet Academy Redwings.  Some highlights of the meet included Nicole Thate's new fieldhouse record in the 800 meter run with a 2:23.0, which qualifies her for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic.  Another record was set by Kristin Benes, who vaulted 8'6" to tie the frosh/soph school record.  Congratulations Nicole and Kristin!  Other first place finishes went to Varsity competitors Sarah Sielisch in the 55 meter hurdles, Lizzie Lestina in the high jump, and Kelly Lamorena in the shot put.  The Varsity team finished in second place with 55 points behind Benet's 67 points.  The frosh/soph team scored 69 points to top Benet's 53.  Along with Benes, other first place finishers on the frosh/soph team were Johanna Schnitzler in the 55 meter hurdles, the 4x160 meter relay team of Benes, Schnitzler, Elaine Chapman and Nikki Mihelich, the 4x400 meter relay team of Benes, Courtney Conrad, Kathleen Riordan, and Schnitzler, Colleen Smith in the long jump, Riordan in the high jump, Deanna McDaniels in the shot put, and in her DGS track and field debut, Mariah Miller won the 200 meter dash.  Well done, ladies!

DGS at Hinsdale Central, February 9, 2008

The DGS track team got off to a strong start at its first meet of the season.  The Mustangs were focused and showed up
ready to compete, and came away with many exceptional performances.  There were ten new lifetime PRs earned today,
as well as several first place finishes.  Varsity first place finishes came from Nicole Thate in the 800, Michelle Hartnett
in the pole vault, and Courtney Gosewisch in the triple jump.  On the Frosh/Soph level, first place was earned by
Colleen Smith in the long jump, Lizzie Lestina in the high jump, the 4x800 meter relay team of Jessica Leone, Courtney
Conrad, Sam Mugnolo and Kathleen Riordan, and Natalie Dust was a double champion in both the 200 and the 55 meter hurdles.  As a team, Varsity finished behind Hinsdale Central (135), and just ten points out of second place with 73 points
to Naperville North's 83.  Frosh/Soph had an impressive second place finish!  Thank you to all the parents and friends
who came out to watch the team compete.
