Play “Arabian Nights” to Run at South High on November 2-4, 2012

Students at South High School in Downers Grove will present the play “Arabian Nights” November 2 through November 4, with evening performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a performance on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The community is welcome to attend. Tickets are $5 for the Friday and Saturday performances. Tickets are $10 for the Sunday performance, which includes a catered Middle Eastern dinner.

Students Danielle Deem and Conor Orth

The performance is filled with tales of love, comedy, and dreams. Scheherazade's cliffhanger stories prevent her husband, the cruel ruler Shahryar, from completing ruthless acts, and after 1,001 nights, Shahryar is cured of his madness, and Scheherazade returns to her family. This adaptation offers a wonderful blend of the lesser-known tales from Arabian Nights with the recurring theme of the transformative power of storytelling. The final scene brings the audience back to a modern day Baghdad with the wail of air raid sirens threatening the rich culture and history that are embodied by these tales.

Nationally recognized playwright Mary Zimmerman originated this production at the Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago.

“Our show is unique in that it includes musicians who will play traditional Middle Eastern instruments as well as dancing, singing, pantomime and improvisation,” says Tiffany Rubin, director.
