North High Students Use School Spirit to Bolster Cancer Awareness
On Friday, October 12 as its team faces rival Hinsdale Central in football, the North High student spirit organization called “N-Zone” hopes to generate excitement for the game--as well as awareness about cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We thought the highly anticipated ‘bucket game’ against Hinsdale Central would be the perfect occasion to also raise awareness for cancer,” said one of the student leaders of N-Zone, Garrett Tierney, a senior. Since 1935, North High and Hinsdale Central have competed for the “Old Oaken Bucket.” The last time Downers Grove won the face-off and controlled the bucket was in 2006.
The group is also raising money for the American Cancer Society by offering a pink, Downers Grove North themed shirt and donating half of the money it collects. The shirts, which have an original and limited-edition design, will be sold on Friday night from 6 p.m. until the end of the varsity game in the stadium, next to the concession stand.
“This is the third year that N-Zone has existed at North,” explains Kim Jaros, N-Zone co-sponsor. “We are so proud of how dedicated our students are and how they took the lead on picking this cause.”
“The N-Zonecreates cheers, chooses themes, and provides an energized atmosphere at the competitions,” adds N-Zone co-sponsor Mark Mirandola. “With our great student leaders this year, we have seen the student body involvement at an all-time high.”
N-Zone has also created a web page where community members may donate online. See http://main.acsevents.org/goto/dgnzone.
