Romelle Taylor, from Glenbard North High School, shared his presentation on History & Heritage.

To kick off Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend, District 99 hosted a Parent & Student Workshop. Walt Williams, D99 Parent Liaison, organized speakers to discuss the topics of Navigating High School and History & Heritage. Hank Thiele, D99 Superintendent, welcomed parents and students and introduced District 99 faculty and administration representatives.

Beginning the Navigating High School conversation, Sherell Fuller, Board of Education Member, discussed the many opportunities available to students at District 99. Prevail Bonga, DGN Board of Education Student Representative, followed up with a student perspective of DGN organizations and shared her positive experience being on the Board of Education. Simone Black, DGS Board of Education Student Representative, was not able to attend the workshop as she was at Theater Fest.

Next, Mr. Williams highlighted upcoming community and District events that parents and students can take advantage of such as Parent Advisory Meeting at DGS on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Conquering College Costs at DGN on Thursday, Jan. 18 and the Black History Play at DGS on Feb. 2-3. DGS Principal Ed Schwartz and DGN Principal Janice Schwarze gave more details on the upcoming events at their schools.

Romelle Taylor, from Glenbard North High School, presented on History & Heritage. Mr. Taylor shared the importance of how the stories we tell and the narratives we write shape our understanding of history and ourselves.

The next Parent & Student Workshop is tentatively scheduled for April - more details will be shared soon. As parent liaison, Mr. Williams works with families and students to enrich their high school experience through his program K.E.Y.S. (Knowledge Empowerment Youth Solutions).
