DGS to host World Language Week January 7-11, 2019

In 2019, the World Language Week poster contest is back! Pictured above is the 2017 poster contest winner.

South High will kick off second semester by hosting World Language Week from Monday, Jan. 7 through Friday, Jan. 11. The theme for 2019 World Language Week is, “Languages Are the Key to the World.” The goal of World Language week is to raise student awareness of the benefits of learning languages.

The DGS World Languages department has planned fun and engaging activities for teachers and students to understand other cultures from around the world. Each day includes culture-enriching activities such as World Language teachers and students sharing photos from abroad adventures; participating in a poster contest; and being quizzed with international trivia.

Each day of South High’s World Language Week is dedicated to a specific language:

  • Monday, Jan. 7: World Language Week Kick Off
  • Tuesday, Jan. 8: French
  • Wednesday, Jan. 9: German
  • Thursday, Jan. 10: Spanish
  • Friday, Jan. 11: Russian

“World Language Week is an opportunity for us to share the importance of learning a foreign language,” South High World Language Department Chair Tara Dellutri said. “The study of a foreign language may be elected to meet college entrance requirements, to enrich a person’s understanding and appreciation of another culture, to broaden a student’s liberal education, to meet career goals, or for travel purposes.”
