The Downers Grove South High School Speech Team took home four awards at the 2017 National Speech & Debate Tournament this past weekend, including the School of Excellence Award, given to the top 20 speech and debate schools in nation.
Fifteen South High students traveled to Birmingham, AL, to compete in the national speech competition, held June 18-23. Vanessa Copeland finished in third place in Expos, Tessa Lawler placed fourth in United States Extemp, and Himal Koshy finished in sixth place in commentary.
Other DGS speech team competitors include Beatrice Beirne, Janella Guzman, Josh Hernandez, Rakiya Johnson, Brianna Leys, Andres Mejia, Jonah Ocuto, Blake Schafer, Grace Ulch, Lydia Walsh-Rock, Timothy Werner, and Jessica Windischman.
