DGN Student Wins Medal in DuPage County ACT-SO Competition

North High senior Veronica Lee earned a Bronze medal in the Engineering category at the 2017 ACT-SO competition, held at the College of DuPage on Saturday, March 18.

The high school ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) program consists of 27 categories encompassed by STEM, Humanities, Business, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. During the program, students participate in leadership development sessions, service activities, and work with an individual mentor to prepare for competition in the spring.

Veronica participated in the Argonne/ACT-SO STEM and Research Mentoring Program. She was matched with a scientist at Argonne, who guided her through her research and preparation for competition.

“This is an incredible honor for Veronica,” says Principal Janice Schwarze. “The ACT-SO program is extremely rigorous and requires a great deal of commitment.”

An Awards Ceremony Banquet was held on Sunday, March 19 at the Bolingbrook Gold Club to recognize the winners and honor the efforts of all student competitors. Over 500 parents, family members, school administrators, local elected officials and other supporters attended the event.

ACT-SO is a nation-wide program sponsored by the NAACP that encourages high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. For more information about ACT-SO, visit http://dupageact-so.org/.
