The last Friday of the Armenian visit was spent seeing the town of Downers Grove. When the city offered us a tour we gladly accepted but did not know how we would spend the five hours they needed. It turned out to be a most rewarding day not only for the Armenians, but for someone who has lived in the area for many years. We started in City Hall where the cable television station gave us a tour and a video prepared for visitors. The video was followed by a tour of the studio and a look "behind the scenes". After that we ventured up stairs to see the "911" center. The people there were great and they even took the time to check for a criminal background on Mr. Hector. Fortunately nothing was found. Lunch was spent at a fire station where the men on duty showed us the equipment and served us a great meal. During lunch they asked to see Armenian money and Armineh gave them what looked like a twenty dollar bill but in reality was worth about twenty cents. They seemed pleased with the souvenir. It was interesting to learn about their schedules and day-to-day work. Following lunch it was back to the police department and a meeting with that group. Armineh took advantage of the tour to put Mr. Hector in his "place". That place was a holding cell in the jail. After meeting the newest member of the department, a very pleasant police dog, we headed home. The day was great and we are grateful to everyone in the city who made it possible. An evening of bowling, pizza, and shopping finished up a wonderful day. After the visit to the different sites of Downers Grove, Ruben and Armineh were the guests of the Downers Grove Teacher’s Association at their monthly bowling function. This function helps supports student scholarships given to graduates planning to enter the teaching field. This was Armineh and Ruben’s first experience at this American past time. Ruben took to the lanes like an old-timer. Armineh rolled a couple of balls but enjoyed the social aspect of the afternoon activity. For dinner we met up with Bill and Ann Hector for our last group dinner. Carol, Ruben, Armineh, Martha and Ann, reviewed the trip, had pizza and made plans for the farewell party on Saturday at Martha’s. Invited were all the teachers, administrators and community individuals that had any contribution to the exchange. |
