Jet lag has really set in for Ms Redell and Ms Merilos. Both experienced a
wide-awake feeling at 3 this morning. After falling back asleep our wake up came
about 7 am. Ms Merilos lives with a family that must take a bus to school. We
left the apartment about 7:45 am. and by 8:15 were at the school building. Ms
Redell's family is within walking distance and she was already at school when Ms
Merilos arrived. School day for the students begins at 9 a.m. The school has two
shifts 9 - 2:30 and 1:30 - 6:30. The early elementary grades and the older are
in the morning. The middle school group is in the afternoon. Teachers arrive
about 45 minutes early to prepare for their day. (Not too different than home. A
cultural universal)
Our routine has become to first check our e-mail, respond to those who have
communicated with us. Today we taught our first class. It was
English for the 8th grade group. It was more of a question and answer
session. Students asked about many topics, including questions about our selves
and our students' back home. Once we had our warm up session with the students,
we did a basic world geography lesson, so students could use vocabulary they
have learned in a real conversation. We had them draw the seven continents and
the four oceans and label each in English. It was interesting how the class was
actively willing to participate. Even thought this is not their native language,
we had a high degree of communication. At the break we had students who were too
shy to speak in front of the group ask us questions. We will return of Friday
with pictures from home and school. We have the yearbooks from both schools to
share with them.
The fifth grade English teacher asked us to preview their Halloween program.
The American holiday of Halloween is becoming very popular in Armenia. The
students were practicing for their program on Friday. After the program the
students were going to go trick and treating around the school.
So far most of our contact with students has been in the computer lab. There
are four work stations for the entire school. Students must take a test and join
the computer club to gain access to these computers. The goal of the program is
to have students teach students and to increase the number of computer literate
students in the school. Currently they are working on creating a web page for
the school. Student collaboration is important in insuring that this project
will be a success.
After spending the afternoon in the computer lab we left for the day and
walked past the American Embassy on our way to the Hotel
Armenia to leave a message for a friend from Chicago who is in Yerevan.
Signing off,
Ms. Merilos & Ms. Redell
